MEET THE TEAM

SCOTT STURGEON, DVM

Dr. Sturgeon is a second-generation veterinarian from Southwest Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2004 and initially went to work with his father in a mixed animal practice. In 2009, Sturgeon left the practice to focus solely on beef cattle. The next few years he focused on cow/calf and stocker programs. In 2014, he joined Dr. Kyle Rozell in forming the Oklahoma Beef Consultants. OBC was founded with focus on non-confined beef cattle consulting. Similar to life, the business evolved, and now performs consulting and service work in all veterinary aspects of the beef cycle; seed-stock, cow/calf, stocker, and feedyard medicine. Being a part of different segments allows Sturgeon to communicate and bring the best practical medicine to clients regardless of production scheme. Dr. Sturgeon is licensed to practice in 6 states: AR, AZ, KS, NM, OK, and TX. Scott and his wife Amber, who is a professor at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, live in Hydro, OK, with their three daughters: Skyler, Paisley, and Bentley. The girls are heavily involved in basketball, softball, showing steers, as well as many successful academic endeavors. Along with playing sports and showing cattle across the country, you can find the Sturgeons inside Boone Pickens Stadium cheering on the Cowboys at every home football game.

Dalton Newell, DVM

Dr. Newell is a 2021 graduate of the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and hold licensure in CA, KS, OK, and TX. Originally from Minco, OK, Dalton grew up in a preconditioning yard which eventually morphed to a small ruminant feeding operation. In veterinary school he was introduced to Dr. Kyle Rozell and Dr. Doug Hilbig his first two semesters, and eventually to Dr. Scott Sturgeon; Newell could only dream of one day having the opportunity to be involved in such a business as the Oklahoma Beef Consultants. He convinced Dr. Hilbig to take him on as an extern early in 2021, and later in the spring, during his final externship prior to graduation, his dream would become a reality thanks to the Sturgeons. Regardless of production method, Dalton believes after the well-being of a herd, the needs of a client are of utmost importance; whether specialized to their operation, educational, or emotional. Though not a principle you will learn in veterinary school, Dr. Newell likes to say, “We are utilizing our knowledge of veterinary medicine to care for people.” Along with consulting and service work, his special interests regarding the veterinary spectrum include: parasitology, immunology, pain management, and animal welfare. In tandem with beef cattle medicine, his background and family’s involvement with sheep and goats has led to a consulting role with small ruminant producers across the country. Outside of veterinary medicine, you can find Dalton judging livestock shows, landscaping, or playing golf. Dr. Newell and his wife, Kass, who is the Executive Vice-President of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, and daughter, Nyla, are members of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and currently reside in Yukon, OK.
